Finland’s first green yacht harbour in Lappeenranta

Green Marina was a design competition held in 2012 for students of Lappeenranta University of Technology and Saimaa Polytechnic. The task was to develop Finland’s first green harbour for leisure boats, with ancillary functions, to be built in the bay of Lappeenranta. It was up to the participants to envision ecological concepts for the various harbour operations. The bay’s entire harbour area was included in the scope of the competition.

The designers were asked to devise environmentally sound ways of supplying energy and water to the jetties and other service points in the harbour, along with innovative services and leisure activities for its visitors. The green harbour will add a new dimension of well-being, sustainable development and eco-friendliness to the urban environment.

The organisers of the competition

The competition was jointly organised by Wirma Lappeenranta Oy, the Port of Lappeenranta, Lappeenrannan Energia and LUT. The winner was awarded a summer job at Lappeenrannan Energia Oy.

The jury was headed by Risto Kiljunen, Executive Director of the Tuuliainen Foundation, and the other members were Hannu Lappalainen (Director, Port of Lappeenranta), Prof. Jero Ahola (LUT Department of Electrotechnics) and Reijo Kolehmainen (Managing Director, Lappeenrannan Energia).

Green action at the harbour

A 5.5 kW solar power plant was installed at the Green Marina in the latter part of the summer, in 2013. The solar panels were attached on top of the gate of dock 11. The power plant is connected to the internet via an inverter and its
production output volumes can be viewed HERE!

If you want to view the production graph, select "Yield and Power". In this tab, you can determine which production period you want to view. For example, the yield of the Green Marina power plant in October was 176.5 kWh, which equals about 15% of one month’s electricity consumption in an electrically heated detached home (relative value).
