Rejlers audited the environmental management system of the Nordic Skiing Pre-World Championships held at Salpausselkä.

Responsibility for the event's arrangements was an important element in the organisation of the Lahti Ski Games. The audit focused on how environmental matters were practically handled in relation to the Games. Key aspects included the organisation of waste management, environmental procurement criteria and the communication of environmental matters.

Promoting responsible sports events is desirable because they have a direct impact on the environment and their effects extend to a global level via supply chains. Furthermore, due to the large number of visitors, people's environmental awareness and attitudes can be influenced as part of the sporting experience.

Reducing the environmental impact of the Games was reflected in such issues as increased utilisation of the available materials and a reduction in the amount of waste. Local food was served at the Games and the disposable plates and cups that were used were biodegradable. Recycled materials had been used in the structures and furniture. There were plenty of waste bins and the waste was sorted.
Since these actions taken were in line with the related plans and met the EcoCompass criteria, the Lahti Ski Games passed the audit.

The EcoCompass certificate is an environmental management system suitable for SMEs and events. More information on the EcoCompass environmental management system: www.ekokompassi.fi
