Food production and consumption – target for 2050
The residents of Lappeenranta eat healthy and sustainably produced domestic food. 100% of waste generated through food production and consumption is utilised.
An action plan and schedule for achieving the target:
2016–2017
- Stimulating an attitude change: campaigns in public kitchens and workplace restaurants and a civil campaign.
- A procurement strategy for the city, which is taken into account in the budget.
- Urban farming is promoted.
2017-2021
- New value chains emerge in local food production. New projects are launched for finding and creating new value chains.
- Development of procurement systems and education.
- Increase people’s awareness of the type and quantity of the waste that they produce.
2021-2025
- Development and production of alternative domestic sources of protein.
- More effective utilisation of food production side streams. A biogas plant that uses biowaste to produce, for example, CNG for use as transport fuel.
2025-2029
- Efforts to change consumer behaviour: meat consumption has been reduced by half and domestic meat is being used.
