Water use and bodies of water – target for 2050

In 2050, the state of groundwater and surface waters corresponds with the natural state. Lappeenranta is an international hub of water technology and water business. The consumption of water and the use of energy for water management have been reduced by half, from the current level. In 2050, the city is making full use of the energy from urban and industrial waters and sludge, as well as the nutrients.

An action plan and schedule for achieving the objectives:

2016–2017

  • Implementation of the purification programme for the Pien-Saimaa lake system
  • An action plan for energy efficient water management is created.

2017-2021

  • Concrete action to engage citizens and local operators in water conservation.
  • Water technology test environments at water treatment plants
  • Heat from industrial wastewater is utilised in the district heating network.

2021-2025

  • Energy use of urban and industrial sludge and use of nutrients in agriculture and forestry.
  • A district cooling network is constructed.

2025-2029

  • Solution for the removal of hazardous and harmful substances from wastewater is found in Lappeenranta.
  • A fertilizer recycling plant begins operations in Lappeenranta.
