Guided tour of Lappeenranta’s environmental actions

Come see what green actions have been implemented in Lappeenranta on a tour organised by Saimaan Matkaverkko!

Many measures to combat climate change, recycle waste and restore bodies of water have been implemented in the city of Lappeenranta. Lappeenranta has been able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 38% over the last 25 years. Lappeenranta will be the first city in the world to use green electricity certified by the EKOenergy network, from the beginning of 2017 onwards. District heating is produced with forest biomass, hydrogen or natural gas so that its carbon footprint is lower than in most Finnish municipalities. In South Karelia, the share of renewable energy, for all production, is one of the highest in Finland. The Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) is Finland’s leading university in the field of energy and it encourages municipalities and companies to introduce new technology.

Lappeenranta has received many acknowledgements for its actions in sustainable development. It was selected as the Climate Capital of Finland by the WWF in 2014 and 2016, as well as the Cycling City of the Year in 2015. The LUT campus was selected as the world’s most ecological campus in 2013 and, in 2016, the city renewed its spot as a finalist among the best cities in the world, in the WWF Earth Hour City Challenge. The active Green Energy Showroom business network, which is working towards a more sustainable future, also operates in the region.
