On the 13th and 14th of September, the City of Lappeenranta hosts Future Energy Solutions Conference, a high-level event related to green electrification and hydrogen economy. The event demonstrates how to transform air and water into fuels, chemicals, materials and even food. Future Energy Solutions is a hybrid event online and at the Lappeenranta City Hall.

The world is looking for a new emission-free and reliable energy system. In Lappeenranta, we turn emissions into opportunities, says Mr. Markku Heinonen, Development Director of Lappeenranta.

– Green electrification is an ambitious initiative but also one of the four main themes of Lappeenranta City’s “European Green Leaf Award” year 2021. Lappeenranta is also the climate capital of Finland and the city’s main goal is to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The main objective of Future Energy Solutions Conference is to share knowledge and promote joint business opportunities and political initiatives.

The event focuses on answering questions such as: “What are the new and innovative products and storages needed?”, and: “How can the European Union and national governments support the transition to smart energy?”

In the conference, companies will reveal the most innovative solutions for saving the planet and creating growth in global business.

Keynotes from top-class experts

The main themes of the conference include green economic recovery in the EU and worldwide. There are many case examples from the marine industry in the conference. In addition, options for green electrification in the transportation, power generation and building sectors will be presented.

The conference begins with an opening by Mr. Kimmo Jarva, City of Lappeenranta’s Mayor, and Mr. Juha-Matti Saksa, Rector of Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology. The conference consists of keynote speeches, company introductions and a panel discussion.

The speakers at the Future Energy Solutions Conference are top-class experts from the European Union (EU), national Ministries, and top companies and researchers. The first keynote speakers of the conference are Ms. Catharina Sikow-Magny, Director of DG Energy, and Mr. Timo Harakka, Finland’s Minister of Transport and Communications.

– Under the Government programme, Finland will be carbon neutral by the year 2035. We aim to halve emissions from domestic transport by 2030. In order to achieve this ambitious goal, the government issued a resolution on a three-phase Roadmap for Fossil-free Transport in May 2021. The implementation of the roadmap has already started, says Minister Harakka.

Results are presented on the European Week of Regions and Cities

The results from the Future Energy Solutions Conference will be presented during the European Week of Regions and Cities, when the City of Lappeenranta organizes a webinar together with other Green Cities; Lahti (Finland), Grenoble (France) and Växjö (Sweden).

In the webinar, on October 13th, Ms. Hanna Holopainen, Member of the Finnish Parliament and Lappeenranta City Council, will speak about green electrification solutions.
