Virtual solutions for the needs of urban construction and process-like industry

The rapid development of virtual technology, especially in technical design and gaming industry environments, has created a vast application market for all social activities. Virtual technologies make it possible to illustrate ever more complicated environments and create new connecting and accelerating bridges between different types of functions. Within the framework of the Smart Project Alliance business network, ViitaCon is implementing such solutions that increase understanding on the principles of sustainable development and lifecycle management.

Virtual solutions are the result of cooperation between different types of expertise

Virtual environments can be generated by different methods depending on the baseline and operational needs, for example

at new sites, design software can be used to convert them directly into 3D models that can then be used for various functional tasks through, for example, viewing software

in existing environments, laser scanning can be used to convert them into a point cloud that can be used as such as a geometric environment, processed into 3D models or used as a hybrid combination of point cloud and novel modelling

360 panoramic imaging can be used mainly for visualisation purposes

Almost all geometric environments can be connected to different functional information systems. Gaming engine-type environments allow such connections in the most flexible and versatile way. One-off implementations are increasingly shifting to continually updated environments that are used to maintain social infrastructure or support the efficient lifecycle management of production facilities.

The use of virtual environments also allows for a variety of collaborative processes: consider, for example, the processes between urban planning, architect firms, supervision of building, construction and project operators, production facility owners and maintenance operators where geometric data and various other metrics are a necessary operational precondition from the point of view of both permissibility and productivity of operations.

The companies in the Smart Project Alliance network have been significantly involved in national development work with regard to, for example, PSK standardisation to create common procedures for the Finnish process industry in this area. Situation report information and follow-up suggestions for utilising virtual solutions have been created with LUT for both the public administration and companies through a digital reserve material audit.

Examples of our projects:

With laser scanning, we have created point cloud materials and 3D models for our customers of, among other things, factory areas, indoor spaces of production facilities and residential building/blocks, especially as background/geometric data for new and rebuilding projects, various virtualisation purposes as well as simulation templates of premises. We also use laser scanning for quality control and the creation of as-built materials within the framework of a size controlled building concept. Laser scanning projects often also include the definition of a factory coordinate system and the measurement and documentation of a control points system.

In virtual design and project management with the Navisworks environment, we enable the combination of 3D materials from different design parties into an up-to-date viewing and commenting environment for the simultaneous use of designers and end users utilising shared collaboration facilities and decentralised terminals – this allows us to speed up the completion of projects and design quality. By connecting the Navisworks environment to the maintenance system, we create new procedures that increase flexibility and safety for, for example, work planning, process separation and annual service training for external workforce.

New gaming engine-based 3D user interfaces enable different measurement and situational data to be displayed in a virtual geometry environment. We have created applications for both industrial and real estate environments using, for example, laser scanning and modelling materials.
